Dragados selected for £100m freight terminal

Dragados has been named as the preferred bidder to build a £100m freight terminal in Lincolnshire.

The Spanish firm was appointed to the first stage of a two-stage contract to design and build a facility for roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ships at the Port of Immingham on the Humber Estuary. The first stage of the contract will include further design development with the client, Associated British Ports.

A contract award notice did not state the value of the deal, but an earlier procurement notice suggested the value of the works would be around £100m.

The works are set to cover at least 46 acres and will include an outer-harbour berth to service RORO vessel traffic; marine infrastructure including finger piers, pontoons, linkspans and jetty approaches; landside development including freight and passenger vehicle parking; and highways infrastructure.

The Port of Immingham is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, with around 46 million tonnes of cargo passing through every year.

Swedish shipping company Stena Line has signed a 50-year lease with Associated British Ports to operate the new facilities. The ferry operator runs four daily freight services from the Humber to the Netherlands.

Dragados has completed several major marine construction projects across the world, including a 2.4km-long breakwater at Punta Lucero, Bilbao and a floating dock at La Condamine, Port Monaco. The contractor pulled out of a £350m harbour expansion project in Aberdeen in 2020, citing Covid restrictions.

Dragados is part of a joint venture with Mace to construct two stations for HS2 at Euston and Birmingham Curzon Street. The firm also completed the £700m Bank station upgrade in London in 2022.
