Sisk confirms £300m Man City stand win

11aJohn Sisk & Son has confirmed that it is building the new North Stand for Manchester City FC’s Etihad Stadium.

Construction News reported last July that the contractor was in talks about the £300m job.

Today’s announcement is Sisk’s first official recognition that a main contract has been signed.

The firm said that pre-construction work began on site in November 2023 and added  that “phase one of the steel works has now commenced on the North Stand”.

It expects the new upper tier for the North Stand with 7,900 extra seats to be ready in time for the 2025/26 football season.

In addition to the new stadium seating, a hotel, workspace areas and public realm space are expected to be completed by late 2026.

Three of the four concrete cores for the hotel have also been poured, Sisk said, and four tower cranes are on site with another to come.

“During the summer months, internal works will commence inside the stadium to mitigate any disruption for supporters when the Premier League season returns in August,” Sisk added.

Laing O’Rourke had been in advanced talks with Manchester City to build the scheme but it walked away in June 2023 having failed to agree a deal with the club.

Construction work to build what was originally known as the City of Manchester Stadium began in 2000, in time to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

It was converted to become the home of Manchester City FC over the following year.

The Etihad Stadium currently has the fifth-largest capacity of the Premier League stadiums with more than 53,000 seats.

The club won a record fourth consecutive Premier League title at the weekend, but is fighting 115 charges of financial irregularity.
